Besiktas manager Senol Gunes has been critical of Dele Alli’s performances for the Turkish giants since signing on loan in the summer from Everton, with the midfielder yet to impress.

Speaking to the press via the Sun, the 70-year-old coach has slammed the England international for his lack of efficiency, with Gunes seemingly mad with himself that he is yet to get through to Alli and to get the performances the manager was expecting from the 26-year-old.

Alli joined Besiktas in the summer six months after signing for Everton in a deal that could reach as high as £40m if certain add-ons were hit. However, even with Frank Lampard trying to recapture the midfielder’s former form that saw him become a star at Tottenham, the project has already been deemed as a failure.

And it now appears that Alli’s move to Besiktas could be heading in a similar direction, with the 26-year-old scoring just once in seven appearances for the Istanbul giants as manager Gunes is seemingly losing hope over the midfielder’s future with the Turkish side.

Indeed, a change of scenery was intended to get Alli back to his best. However, a move to Turkey has seemingly done the opposite with the attacking midfielder failing to impress key figures at Besiktas, and the Everton loan star’s future now looks even more bleak.

Gunes said when asked about Alli’s time at Besiktas so far this season: “I couldn’t affect the players [yet], now I can easily touch them, but we haven’t touched Dele Alli yet. Let’s not discuss Dele Alli as a player, but he is below expectations in terms of efficiency.”

Alli’s career has been one of the biggest enigmas in modern football, with the midfielder going from one of the most exciting talents in Europe and a potential superstar for England to a player who is now struggling in Turkey after being shipped out on loan by an Everton side that last year were facing relegation.

It’s a tale that nobody would have predicted a few years ago. Yet whilst a move away from England was seemingly made to get Alli away from the spotlight and back to his best form, Besiktas has likely made things worst for the 26-year-old, who is now nothing but a shadow of his former self.
