Dean Jones has told Give Me Sport that Dan Ashworth is ‘on board’ with Newcastle United signing Brighton winger Leandro Trossard – with the Toon said to be rivalling Chelsea for a £25million-rated star in the January window.

Trossard, 27, has been in magnificent form for Brighton this season. The Belgium international has already netted seven goals in the Premier League in just 12 games. Including a hat-trick at Anfield during a 3-3 draw with Liverpool.

According to journalist Graeme Bailey via the Talking Transfers podcast, Newcastle want Trossard. The Brighton star’s contract is due to expire at the end of the season, and that makes him available. A fee of £25m is enough.

Meanwhile, The Mirror report that Chelsea are also interested. A move that would reunite Trossard with Graham Potter. Other clubs are likely to become interested. Jones reports that Ashworth is on board with a Trossard move.

“Yeah, they are [interested]. He’s someone that is definitely on the radar. Obviously, Dan Ashworth is the man that’s going to need to be convinced over any signing, but I’m told that he is on board with this,” Jones reported.

Ashworth on board with Newcastle signing Chelsea target Trossard

What a signing Trossard would be – but would a move be harsh on Miguel Almiron? The Paraguay international has been in stunning form this season – netting again against Aston Villa on Sunday. He has got better and better.

Playing with huge confidence at the moment, Almiron is finally showing Newcastle fans why Rafa Benitez brought him to the club, Almiron is one of the first names on the Toon team sheet. He deserves to be a regular in the side.

But signing Trossard would see him come into the team over Almiron. So, a move for the Belgian – albeit a wonderful signing – would be harsh on Almiron. Howe and Ashworth have to make sure it is the right move to sign Trossard.
