Chelsea journalist Simon Phillips has told Give Me Sport that Graham Potter is interested in bringing in competition for Reece James at right-back – and Wolves defender Nelson Semedo is a name that is being considered by the Blues.

Semedo, 28, joined Wolves from Barcelona for a fee of £37million in 2020. But the Portugal international has struggled to really impose himself at Molineux since. This season, he has played 12 times, five of which have been off the bench.

A player of huge quality and clearly, at his best, is capable of playing for a club competing in the Champions League. But he needs the confidence to do so. At Wolves, his current deal expires next June, but there is an option to extend.

Indeed, Wolves can extend it by a further two years. The fact they are yet to do so perhaps suggests that they are waiting for bids for Semedo. There is little chance they will get the fee paid for him, but a decent fee in January.

Phillips claims that the Blues want to bring in cover for James and Semedo is a target: “Chelsea also like Nelson Semedo from Wolves and are considering him as an option to come in to give competition for Reece James.”

Chelsea interested in Wolves defender Semedo as James competition

What is a good price for a player that is struggling but once cost £37million? Has Portugal caps and more than 100 appearances for Barcelona? Throw in his contract situation, too. Perhaps, Chelsea could get a bargain deal for Semedo.

Semedo will surely be tempted by a move to Stamford Bridge. While he would be back-up to James, he would get plenty of game time and the chance to play in the Champions League. Perhaps, a fee of £20million could be enough.
