Paul Merson has admitted that he is at a loss to explain why Fabinho has been struggling for Liverpool this season.

The Brazil international joined Jurgen Klopp’s side for £40 million in 2018 [The Guardian] and has been a monstrous figure in the Reds’ midfield ever since then.

But this season, Fabinho is one of a number of tried-and-tested players who are suddenly struggling under Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp.

It’s been one step forward and two back for the Anfield outfit during the entire campaign, evident by how they followed up with a victory over Manchester City and West Ham United by losing to Nottingham Forest last weekend.

And although Merson doesn’t know ‘what the problem is’, the former Arsenal player is certain that if the Reds are to find consistency this season, the former Monaco stalwart needs to be at his very best.

He told Sportskeeda: “Fabinho has played a lot of matches this season. I do like him, and I’m not sure what the problem is there. If Liverpool are to be a success, they need him at their best.”

There’s simply no doubt that Liverpool will bounce back and find the sort of consistency which has made them one of Europe’s best teams in recent years.

That being said, Merson is also right in arguing that for that to happen, Fabinho does need to improve also.

It hasn’t helped the big man that he’s played with a number of different midfield partners this season, due to an injury crisis.

But even still, Klopp has dropped him to the bench on a number of occasions and that right there is symptomatic of his problem.
