Former Premier League owner Simon Jordan admits he doesn’t ‘understand’ the lack of interest in Sean Dyche while questioning why Crystal Palace did not make a more to hire the former Burnley boss, speaking to talkSPORT

It is six months now since Dyche departed Turf Moor.

In that time, Aston Villa, Wolves, Bournemouth and Brighton have all found themselves searching for a new head coach, while Nottingham Forest, Leicester City and Southampton have also considered changes in the dugout.

Dyche’s name, however, remains strangely absent from those discussions. Does his reputation as something of an old-school throwback count against him? Is he merely too ‘unfashionable’, his trademark black coat a reflection of the man himself; functional, uncomplicated, criticism bouncing off him like raindrops?

Sean Dyche without a club six months after Burnley exit

“I genuinely don’t know,” Jordan muses when asked why Dyche, who turned Burnley into an established top-flight side on a limited budget, remains without a club.

“He is a very capable Premier League football manager. For some reason or another, he doesn’t attract any degree of stardust.

“I don’t know whether it’s because he’s quite low-key. Or because he’s elected to manage Burnley for seven years and people think that’s his level. The possibility of Sean Dyche landing in a big club seems to be something which is very much resisted by people.

“I don’t quite understand but it’s there. And I don’t see it changing any time soon.”

Why did Crystal Palace now hire Dyche?

Dyche was reportedly in the frame for the Crystal Palace job not so long ago. But, while the Eagles have a track record when it comes to appointing old-school, homegrown coaches, Palace would instead opt for a more so-called ‘modern’ tactician in Patrick Vieira.

“I was aware – and this is gossip – that a few years ago Sean was very interested in the Crystal Palace job,” Jordan adds. “And wasn’t really much considered for it. And that’s from a club that takes a certain type of manager; Roy Hodgson, Tony Pulis, Alan Pardew, and Sam Allardyce.

“But Sean didn’t seem to (have a chance of getting it). Now that might be gossip. I suspect it’s gossip that’s steeped in some semblance of fact.

“The more I’ve watched Sean, the more I’ve been impressed with him. I think there is a mis-representation of how he plays. I think Sean is a victim of his own personality to some extent. He’s very blunt, and I think football has sort of moved in a different direction.”
