French newspaper L’Equipe report that Thomas Tuchel has rejected the chance to join Aston Villa as manager after the Midlands club made a cash-rich offer in an attempt to lure the German to Villa Park – following his Chelsea exit.

Tuchel, 49, was relieved of his duties at Chelsea earlier this season. It comes after the German gaffer had clocked up his 100th match as boss, a 1-0 loss to Dinamo Zagreb in Croatia. Tuchel had lost three of his seven games this season.

Since then, Graham Potter has impressed as Chelsea boss – making the switch to Potter prove to be the right one. Tuchel remains highly-regarded in football management and it is deemed only a matter of time before he gets a job.

The report from L’Equipe says Villa have made him an offer. Steven Gerrard was sacked after a 3-0 loss to Fulham last Thursday – and Villa quickly bounced back without Gerrard, beating Brentford 4-0 under caretaker boss Aaron Danks.

The report states that Villa offered Tuchel a hefty wage. That, and cash to spend in the upcoming transfer markets. But Tuchel, who was also the subject of interest from Leverkusen before they appointed Xabi Alonso, has rejected Villa.

Ultimately, Villa are below Tuchel. He is a manager in the top bracket, winning 60 of his 100 Chelsea games. While he was sacked by the Blues, he is widely expected to re-enter management at one of Europe’s best clubs at some point.

A move to Villa would have been a surprising one. They are an ambitious club with plenty of cash to spend. But as things stand, the best they can really hope for this season is a top-half finish. A lack of Europe will have been a factor.
