Gabby Agbonlahor has reacted on Twitter after Aston Villa announced that Unai Emery had left Villarreal to join the club as Steven Gerrard’s replacement as manager – with the Spaniard set for his second spell in the Premier League.

Joining Arsenal little over four years ago, the 50-year-old gaffer won 43 of his 76 Arsenal matches. But his spell as Gunners boss was deemed a failure, and eventually replaced by Mikel Arteta. He has since starred as Villarreal boss.

Winning more than half of his 129 matches with the La Liga side, Emery has guided his side to the Europa League trophy in 2020-21. Then, last season, his Villarreal side reached the Champions League semi-finals, losing to Liverpool.

However, Villarreal have not been good this season. So much so, that Emery has decided to take Villa up on their proposal. That is, after reports from L’Equipe claim Villa saw a move to land ex-Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel rejected.

It is unclear how long a contract Emery has signed with the Midlands club. He will also only start work from November 1, due to securing his work permit. It means Aaron Danks will be in charge against Newcastle United on Saturday.

Agbonlahor reacts: Villa announce Emery as Gerrard replacement

What a move from Villa. Emery has sparkled at every club he has managed – although, spells at PSG and Arsenal might not have gone to plan. He still impressed at those clubs. But he is best when joining a club out of the upper echelon.

Villarreal, Sevilla, Valencia, for example. It now sees Emery take over a similar club in Villa – in terms of size, but also positioning in the table. The difference he has at Villa is that the club will have a hefty transfer budget to use.

Emery’s appointment has been met with plenty of praise from the Villa faithful. Agbonlahor gave his instant reaction in the form of two Tweets – claiming Villa will now be harbouring ambition of European football.
