Ally McCoist has told TalkSPORT (Monday, 6.25AM) that he believes Tottenham captain Hugo Lloris should have been given a free-kick and that Newcastle striker Callum Wilson was “clever”, as the England man gave the Toon the lead.

Newcastle moved into the top-four on Sunday with a 2-1 win in the Capital. Eddie Howe’s side could have scored more goals, but it was Wilson and Miguel Almiron that got the goals – Harry Kane netting his tenth league goal of 22-23.

But Newcastle’s first was controversial. Latching on to a long ball, Lloris came out of his penalty area. He and Wilson barged into eachother, and the France captain hit the deck. It saw Wilson pick up the loose ball and chip into the net.

Tottenham players, fans, and Lloris were furious. One of those decisions that VAR was not going to overturn, but had the referee given a foul, it would not have been changed. McCoist thinks a foul should have been given against Wilson.

“I would’ve given a foul, and I cannot believe i’m saying that against a centre-forward. But I think Wilson is very clever, and brings his left arm round. I thought it was very fortunate to be given as a goal,” McCoist told TalkSPORT.

McCoist: Tottenham captain Lloris should have been given free-kick

It is a tricky one. The two certainly came together and it must be said, that Lloris does throw himself to the ground. The Frenchman called on his experience, with the knowledge that he was some way out of his penalty area.

But it was a coming together. Wilson can not do much more than run into the French goalkeeper. McCoist, though, has a point. Wilson’s left arm does help him get leverage, making sure Lloris cannot get to the loose ball first.

As stated, VAR would not have overruled any decision the referee made. It is one of those contentious decisions, but one that shows that the referee is still the one making the big decisions. Wilson got lucky, Spurs lose two in a row.
