A massive Virgil van Dijk miss now looks very costly for Liverpool.

The Dutchman missed a gilt-edged header at the City Ground this afternoon as Jurgen Klopp’s side endured a difficult first half away to Nottingham Forest.

Van Dijk found himself with Liverpool’s best opportunity of the half.

James Milner floated a wonderful cross in from right-back but the former Southampton powerhouse, who earns £220,000 per week, got the header all wrong.

It’s difficult to know whether Van Dijk made a hash of the attempt at goal or was actually trying to tee up Roberto Firmino.

Either way, it was a horrible moment for the usually-lethal Liverpool defender.

Here’s what Alan Shearer told Premier League Productions [broadcast 22/10, 1:24 pm]: “This one, we can’t work out whether Van Dijk’s trying to head that cross or if it’s a terrible header and he’s going for goal. Whatever it is, it should be in the back of the net.”

The reason why it was so costly is because in the second half, former Liverpool striker Taiwo Awoniyi opened the scoring against his old side to give Steve Cooper’s side the lead.

Prior to kickoff today, Jurgen Klopp’s troops had won their previous two Premier League outings – including against Manchester City – and it looked like they were finally finding their feet.

But it’s still one step forward and two back for Liverpool right now.
