Antonio Conte has told Monday’s press conference – as transcribed by Football London – as saying that he is “really pleased” with Tottenham defender Matt Doherty, claiming the Ireland star had an “amazing” 2021-22 campaign.
Doherty, 30, was handed only his second start of the 2022-23 campaign for Tottenham on Saturday. The ex-Wolves man has come in for Emerson Royal, who remains suspended after a straight red card against Arsenal, in a 3-1 loss.
The £15million recruit started against Brighton during a 1-0 win, and then against Everton on Saturday. He was superb, arguably one of Tottenham’s best players on the day – up there with Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Harry Kane.
Asked about Doherty in Monday’s press conference ahead of Wednesday night’s clash against Manchester United, Conte gave his verdict. He said he is “really pleased” with the right-back, praising his form last season before an injury.

“He needed time to recover well. Physically and mentally, because Matthew started last season struggling. Then when he started to play he played very well. He had an amazing season. He took a lot of confidence in his potential.
“Then, a serious injury. He struggled a lot to recover. During training, the player didn’t feel the same confidence. Now he is back. I’m really pleased for him. Really happy for him. We are talking about a really good guy and also a player.”

The big question for Doherty, is whether he will retain his place in Tottenham’s starting XI when Royal returns. Doherty is more than likely to start against Manchester United on Wednesday. But does he keep his spot against Newcastle?
Royal will be available again when Spurs face Newcastle on Sunday. It might be that Doherty is rested after three games in a row – but could then feature again against Sporting Lisbon in the Champions League next week.
