Back in the summer, it was said that Arsenal and Liverpool both made attempts to sign Douglas Luiz from Aston Villa.

According to Sky Sports, the Gunners made three bids for the Brazil international with the highest of those offers worth £25m – the Daily Mail claimed Arsenal were set to try again in January.

Elsewhere, it was Calciomercato who revealed that Liverpool want Luiz in January after Arthur suffered an injury.

However, both Mikel Arteta and Jürgen Klopp may have to look elsewhere after an update on the £15m man.

Why Arsenal & Liverpool have been dealt blow

Well, despite Sky Sports claiming that Luiz wanted to leave Aston Villa, the South American has now surprisingly signed a new long-term contract at Villa Park.

After penning fresh terms in the Midlands, the Aston Villa No.6 told the club’s official website: “I’m so happy in this club and I love this club. I love the people here, the staff and the players.”

Clearly, Steven Gerrard has won Luiz over, after it seemed destined that he would be leaving Villa Park.

The 24-year-old was left out of the starting XI at the start of the campaign, although some impressive displays have seen him force his way back into the fold.

Now, Luiz will attempt to kick on at Villa Park throughout October and the start of November, as he aims to win a place in the starting XI for Brazil at the World Cup.

So far this season, the Rio de Janeiro-born playmaker has made nine appearances in all competitions, scoring two goals.

Arsenal & Liverpool could move onto another cut-price midfielder

In our view, both the Gunners and the Reds could now focus their attention on Youri Tielemans.

According to David Ornstein, Arsenal are interested in the Belgium international, who sees his terms expire at Leicester in July.

Of course, a shock new contract could still come out of the blue for Tielemans at the King Power Stadium, although if his situation remains unchanged in January, we wouldn’t be surprised to see Arsenal and Liverpool make offers.
