Jamie Carragher highlighted Mohamed Salah and Diogo Jota for their hat-tricks as Liverpool thrashed Rangers 7-1 in the Champions League on Wednesday night at Ibrox, as he told CBS Sports on Paramount+ (12/10/22 at 10:20 pm).
For Salah, it was a hat-trick of goals from the bench – six minutes and 12 seconds to be precise – whilst Jota, another bench destroyer, put up an impressive three assists in the same amount of time.
Even though Rangers opened the scoring through Scott Arfield and both teams went into the break level, the home team just couldn’t withstand the attacking pressure that was put on them.
The game was over by the time Salah scored his first because there were 15 minutes left on the clock and Jurgen Klopp’s men had a two-goal cushion.
But that wasn’t going to stop Salah from causing havoc and shutting up his critics ahead of his side’s heavyweight clash against Manchester City on Sunday.
Carragher mentioned how Anfield will be now ‘bouncing’, as a result of last night’s win and he is hoping Liverpool’s star man on the right can now take ‘confidence’ from that hat-trick.
“It didn’t start well, Liverpool conceding the first goal of the game, that’s 14 times in the last 20 games,” said Carragher. “Mo Salah came off the bench to score the quickest hat-trick in Champions League history, I think it was just on six minutes and 12 seconds.
“Diogo Jota, he came off the bench and assisted all three goals as well. You just think, not just tonight, will this have a knock-on effect for Liverpool going forward?
“We have Manchester City, possibly the best team in Europe at the weekend, and they needed a result like that, confidence for Mo Salah and I think Anfield will be bouncing now at the weekend.”
THE MAN CITY TEST
Against Manchester United and Arsenal this season, those on Merseyside have failed to capitalise on their abject start and lift themselves from their current mess.
A number of weeks ago, they beat Ajax in the Champions League, which didn’t help their league form, before beating Rangers last week at Anfield.
Once again, as proved to be the case against the Premier League leaders Arsenal, they still couldn’t get that bad form out of their system.
Well, on Sunday, they have another chance to try and turn their season on its head because three points against Manchester City will send a signal to others that they are still here.
