Liverpool host Manchester City this Sunday, so where are Jurgen Klopp’s last XI to beat the Citizens in the Premier League now? Dejan Lovren and Sadio Mane were among the squad.

The Anfield natives have not beaten their Etihad Stadium rivals in their past five top-flight meetings. But the Reds have won the last two encounters between the two teams, having claimed a 3-2 win in last season’s FA Cup semi-final and a 3-1 win in the Community Shield.

Both of last season’s Premier League matches between the recent title rivals ended as 2-2 draws. Liverpool also held Manchester City to a 1-1 stalemate on their visit to the Etihad in November 2020. But Pep Guardiola beat Klopp in July ‘20 and at Anfield in February 2021.

Liverpool have not beaten Manchester City in the Premier League since 2019

Liverpool last beat Manchester City in the Premier League back in November 2019 with a 3-1 win at Anfield. Fabinho broke the deadlock for Klopp’s squad before Mohamed Salah doubled their advantage. Mane would later strike before Bernardo Silva pulled a goal back.

Klopp will hope to orchestrate a repeat of the 2019 result when Guardiola’s team travel to Merseyside this Sunday. Manchester City will go into the weekend second in the standings to Arsenal by just a point. Liverpool are only in 10th after losing at the Gunners last Sunday.

Arsenal responded to two equalisers to beat Liverpool 3-2 and deal the Reds their second defeat of the term. Manchester City are the only team yet to lose a Premier League match this season. The Gunners have suffered one defeat, but boast a division-leading eight wins.

Liverpool’s loss at the Emirates Stadium left the Reds six points outside of the Champions League positions. Arsenal and Manchester City are also now 14 and 13 points better off than the Reds. While Tottenham Hotspur sit in third with a 10-point advantage on Liverpool.

So, as Liverpool look ahead to hosting Manchester City and potentially getting their season in gear, HITC Football takes a look back at their last Premier League win over the Citizens…

Alisson Becker (GK): Brazilian started Liverpool’s last league win over Man City

Brazil goalkeeper Alisson Becker started the last time that Liverpool beat Manchester City in the Premier League. The 30-year-old featured 29 times under Klopp during the 2019/20 top-flight season. He also recorded 15 clean sheets but would fail to shut out the Citizens.

Trent Alexander-Arnold (RB): Reds product had his most creative campaign in 19/20

Trent Alexander-Arnold registered his most creative Premier League season yet during the 2019/20 campaign. The 24-year-old only laid on 13 assists in 38 games that term to eclipse the 12 he offered in 2018/19. He also offered 12 in 2021/22 but is yet to create this term.

Virgil van Dijk (CB): The Dutch enforcer played every minute of 2019/20

Virgil van Dijk played every minute of Liverpool’s 2019/20 Premier League campaign as the Reds ended their 30-year wait to lift the top-flight title. He also played every minute of the club’s Champions League season, UEFA Super Cup, Community Shield and an FA Cup tie.

Dejan Lovren (CB): Zenit St Petersburg signed the Croatian in 2020

Zenit St Petersburg signed Dejan Lovren from Liverpool for £11m in July 2020 after the 33-year-old helped Klopp’s side win the Premier League title. The centre-half is now the club’s captain but is some way shy of matching his 185 fixtures with the Reds from 2014 to 2020.

Andrew Robertson (LB): Scotland captain had his most creative campaign in 19/20

Andrew Robertson penned his most creative Premier League season for Liverpool yet over the 2019/20 term. The Scotland captain laid on 12 assists across 36 games, bettering his 11 from 2018/19 and 10 in 2021/22. He has just one assist from six outings so far this season.

Fabinho (CDM): Brazilian broke the deadlock as Liverpool beat Man City in 2019

Fabinho broke the deadlock in November 2019 to help toward the last time Liverpool beat Manchester City in the Premier League. The Brazilian beat Claudio Bravo inside the sixth minute at Anfield with a long-range strike. It was one of just two goals he hit that season.

Jordan Henderson (CM): England ace led Liverpool’s last league win over Man City

Jordan Henderson led Liverpool the last time the Reds beat Manchester City in the Premier League. Mane also scored from the Reds captain’s cross for the England ace’s first assist of the season. Henderson would end 2019/20 with five assists and four goals in 30 matches.

Georginio Wijnaldum (CM): Roma ace was a near ever-present for Klopp in 19/20

Georginio Wijnaldum was a near ever-present part of Klopp’s Premier League squad in the 2019/20 term. He started 35 of his 37 outings and opened 34 of his 38 games in 20/21. Yet the 31-year-old has only started 18 top-flight matches since he left Anfield for free in 2021.

Paris Saint-Germain signed Wijnaldum to a €9.8m-a-year (£165k-a/w) wage after his terms with Liverpool expired. Yet the Dutchman struggled under Mauricio Pochettino and started just 18 of his 31 Ligue 1 games. He then secured a loan move to Roma during this summer.

But Wijnaldum has so far only played 12 minutes in all competitions under Jose Mourinho since he moved to the Stadio Olimpico on a season-long loan. He fractured his tibia during training in August and he is not due to recover until after the 2022 Fifa World Cup in Qatar.

Mohamed Salah (RW): Egypt star headed home his sixth goal of 19/20 vs Man City

Salah headed home his sixth goal of the 2019/20 Premier League campaign for Liverpool’s second goal in their last top-flight win over Manchester City. He met Robertson’s delivery to beat Bravo and went on to end the campaign with 19 goals and 10 assists from 34 games.

Roberto Firmino (ST): Brazilian led Klopp’s attack vs Man City in November 2019

Roberto Firmino led Klopp’s attack at home to Guardiola’s side in November 2019. The 31-year-old started 34 of his 38 appearances during the 2019/20 top-flight term. He also had nine goals and eight assists, but he could not create at home or away to Manchester City.

Sadio Mane (LW): Bayern Munich bought the Senegal star from Liverpool in 2022

Mane completed a £27.5m, rising to £35m, move to Bayern Munich this June and signed a three-year contract in Bavaria. The transfer made the Senegal forward just the third player who started Liverpool’s last Premier League win over Manchester City to leave Anfield yet.

The 30-year-old left Merseyside after six years with 120 goals and 49 assists in 269 fixtures in all competitions. Mane scored 18 and created nine goals from 35 games in the 2019/20 Premier League season – heading home his seventh of the term to edge Manchester City.
