Allan McGregor was labelled ‘brilliant’ by St Mirren manager Stephen Robinson in the aftermath of Rangers’ thumping 4-0 Scottish Premiership win at Ibrox this weekend, speaking to Herald Scotland.

It’s not often a team wins by four goals to nil and it’s the man between the sticks who is singled out for praise at full-time.

But McGregor, just four days after that virtuoso display against Liverpool in the Champions League, rolled back the years once again in Glasgow, laying the foundations for an excellent Rangers win with a couple of important early saves.

“It might sound daft to say it wasn’t a 4-0 (game). But, at key moments, the game went against us,” sighs former Motherwell boss Robinson.

“It isn’t often you come to Ibrox and have two one-v-ones. Mark O’Hara (denied by a) great save by McGregor, and a brilliant save from Alex Grieve in the first half. So, from middle to front, I thought there was a lot of really good aspects of play.”

Ahead of Liverpool’s trip to Scotland’s second city this week, the clinical Colak gave his hopes of a starting berth a timely boost with another clinical brace against the Buddies. The Croatian reacted brilliantly to snaffle an opener after Borna Barisic’s shot came back of the post, before weaving his way through the visiting defence and finishing in style to make it ten goals in nine Premiership games.

“When you are playing against a team of this calibre,” Robinson adds. “We got punished for mistakes. We got punished for the first goal, for letting people turn. And at the third and fourth, we got punished for not keeping players one way and letting them turn.

“There are things we can improve on and be better on. But it’s difficult to be critical of players when you’re playing against opposition that will punish you for every mistake.”

James Tavernier also scored a trademark penalty against St Mirren. Fashion Sakala, meanwhile, marked a rare start with a goal and an assist.
