Middlesbrough want talks with Michael Carrick as the boyhood Newcastle United fan considers a move to their North East rivals.

Boro took the decision to sack Chris Wilder on Monday following a truly dismal start to the season.

Many were backing Boro for promotion but their start to the season has been a huge disappointment.

Last weekend’s 1-0 defeat at Coventry City left Boro with just two wins from 11 Championship outings and Wilder paid the price with his job.

Middlesbrough want talks with Michael Carrick

Boro brought Wilder in to win promotion but now appear to be going on a complete shift with young coaches targeted.

Rob Edwards appeared to be the top choice but an emerging name is that of Michael Carrick.

iNews report that Carrick is one name being considered by Boro as they start interviews for Wilder’s replacement.

BBC Sport now add that Boro are keen to hold talks with Carrick about potentially taking the job with Steve Gibson interested in the former England ace.

Carrick, 41, had a spell in caretaker charge of Manchester United last season and went unbeaten in three games, claiming two wins and a draw.

Carrick decided to end his time at United once Ralf Rangnick came in and he has been waiting patiently for his next coaching chance.

A return to the North East would surely appeal to Carrick, who hails from Wallsend – just about an hour away from Middlesbrough.

Carrick is a noted boyhood Newcastle United fan but could now head to join the Magpies’ rivals as their new manager.

Middlesbrough aren’t Newcastle’s biggest rivals – we all know that’s Sunderland – but when the pair are back in the same division, you can expect that rivalry to ramp up once again.

Boro may now look for Carrick to be the man to take them back to the Premier League and reignite that rivalry, allowing the Geordie to go up against his boyhood club.
