Steven Gerrard has added fuel to what was already a considerable fire by suggesting Leeds United were “lucky” to get away with a point against Aston Villa on Sunday – as the two sides played out a feisty, hotly-contested 0-0 draw.

In what was Leeds’ first game in 29 days, Villa were hoping to continue a good couple of results after a woeful start to the season. But it was Leeds that were on the front foot in the first half, getting in behind Villa on numerous occasions.

However, the game changed when Luis Sinisterra was sent off. Earning a second yellow, he blocked a free-kick just three yards away, earning an instant second yellow. Leeds held on to a point, despite the red coming on 48 minutes.

Villa had chances, mostly through Ollie Watkins – but Emi Buendia and Philippe Coutinho came close, too. Illan Meslier was in top form, while Liam Cooper and Luke Ayling made some excellent blocks. Gerrard said Leeds were “lucky”.

“We created more than enough chances. Slightly more frustrating because the second half was against ten men. Credit to Leeds, they defended well, they got a little bit of luck and we go away frustrated,” Gerrard said, as per BBC Live.

Gerrard: Leeds were lucky to get a point against Villa

While Gerrard is right to suggest Leeds did have a bit of luck, you earn your own luck. Leeds worked incredibly hard when down to 10, and put their bodies on the line to keep their clean sheet. A bit of luck, but deserving of said luck.

Leeds could have even snatched it. Patrick Bamford had a shot well-saved by Emi Martinez, while setting up Mateusz Klich also saw Leeds have a golden chance – but for a stunning tackle from John McGinn.

In what was largely a bad-tempered affair where time-wasting was an issue again, Leeds earned their own luck. For both sides, there are positives. Both sides face away games next, Leeds at Palace, and Villa at Nottingham Forest.
