Leandro Trossard smashed an Anfield hat-trick on Saturday – and became the first visiting player to do so since Andrey Arshavin.

Brighton and Hove Albion headed to Liverpool as a real unknown quantity.

Not because the Seagulls are a mystery themselves, but more because they have a new manager in Roberto De Zerbi.

The Italian is in following Graham Potter’s exit and it was unclear whether he would stick to the usual plan or bring in some of his own ideas.

De Zerbi did have some of his own ideas on show as Brighton proved to be a real problem for Liverpool.

Leandro Trossard smashed an Anfield hat-trick

The Seagulls were 2-0 up thanks to Leandro Trossard’s first-half brace before Liverpool roared back.

Roberto Firmino’s double levelled it up before an Adam Webster own goal seemed to have given Liverpool the win.

Trossard wasn’t done though, adding a third late on to give Brighton a point and himself a hat-trick.

The Belgian has started this season brilliantly and now has five five goals and one assist in seven outings.

Part of the brilliance with Trossard is his versatility having been utilised as a winger, wing back, playmaker and striker with the Seagulls.

The 27-year-old now finds himself wanted by Arsenal with the Gunners keen on signing the former Genk star according to Voetbal Belgie.

Arsenal are in the market for another winger amid links to Shakhtar Donetsk winger Mykhaylo Mudryk but Trossard could offer an alternative.

Whether that move happens remains to be seen but Trossard has now followed in the footsteps of one former Arsenal player.

Trossard became just the third player in Premier League history to score a Premier League hat-trick as a visiting player at Anfield.

The first was Peter Ndlovu for Coventry City in 1995, but the last before Trossard was Andrey Arshavin for Arsenal back in 2009.

Arshavin famously scored four times in a bonkers 4-4 draw and the Russian holding four fingers up to the Arsenal fans remains an iconic image.

Trossard joining that exclusive list means he has followed in Arshavin’s footsteps and that path could be added to if Arsenal do make a move for Trossard in 2023.
