Tottenham have made goalkeeper Jan Oblak a ‘primary target’ to replace Hugo Lloris when the Frenchman does finally leaves – and Kieran Trippier thinks he is one of the best in the world, hoping one day he will come to Newcastle.
Oblak, 29, is seen as one of Europe’s most-colossal goalkeepers after shining in his eight years with Diego Simeone’s side. Clocking up 360 outings, he has conceded just 275 goals and kept a whopping 177 clean sheets for Atletico.
Of course, he played alongside Kieran Trippier at Atletico Madrid. Spurs sold Trippier to Atletico in 2019 and the England man stayed there until returning to England with Newcastle in January 2022. The duo won La Liga in 20-21.
Now, Oblak could follow Trippier to England – but to one of Trippier’s old clubs. Tottenham are planning for life without their captain – who has a deal until 2024. Oblak is first choice, but Spurs face competition from Manchester United.

Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live earlier this year, as per SportsMax, Trippier said: “From my time playing with him, the amount of points he saved us and his shot-stopping, for me, he’s the best in the world, for sure.
“He’d be unbelievable in the Premier League, but obviously it’s who could he go to? That’s the question. I’ve had conversations with him before about the Premier League. You never know what could happen [on Newcastle].”
Trippier thinks Tottenham target Oblak one of the best in world
Is he better than Lloris? Probably. But Oblak has a contract at Atletico Madrid until the summer of 2028 and Simeone’s side can request any kind of transfer fee they want for the 52-time Slovenia star. The ball is very much in their court.
So, where do Spurs go from here? It is going to be an expensive purchase regardless of the fact he turns 30 in January, and that he is a goalkeeper. He could still give Spurs a man to trust between the sticks for the next six or seven years.
Would Tottenham be his landing spot? Other Premier League clubs like United will also require a goalkeeper. David De Gea is likely to go, so Oblak would be a top replacement. Chelsea require improvement. But Spurs have a chance.
