RB Leipzig midfielder Konrad Laimer has opened up on his admiration for Premier League giants Liverpool after being denied a move to Jurgen Klopp’s side during the summer transfer window, speaking to Servus TV.
Austria coach Ralf Rangnick recently labelled Laimer ‘one of the best, if not the best’ in the game at what he does. And what he does, to put it simply, is a bit of everything.
Is there a footballer better suited to Klopp’s style-of-play? Laimer is a footballer with a Ferrari engine in a Range Rover’s body; a ball-winner and a ball-player rolled into a granite-carved 5ft 11ins frame. He’s even added goals to his game these days. A tally of five during the 2021/22 campaign made that the most prolific season of Laimer’s career.
Now, Leipzig refused to cash in on the Austria international over the summer, despite interest from the likes of Liverpool and Bayern Munich. But with their £25 million-rated powerhouse out of contract in 2023, Liverpool could still add one of Europe’s most complete midfielders to their ranks without having to spend a penny in transfer fees.

“In the end, I would have been ready to take a new step. It didn’t happen because the go-ahead from Leipzig didn’t come,” Laimer explains, recalling a summer of sustained speculation.
“They quickly said: ‘No, that’s not possible’. On the one hand, that’s nice because (it shows) you’re an important player. But it’s also difficult because a lot of discussions have been held. You’ve thought a lot (about leaving), reflected a lot.”
“I’ve been in Leipzig for five years and I feel good. Now, it will be a year longer and then we will see what happens. I generally like watching the Premier League. I’ve always been a Liverpool fan.”
According to BILD, Laimer has already turned down the opportunity to extend his contract at the Red Bull Arena.
