After its title was officially confirmed to be Thunivu from AK 61, insiders warn that the release could clash with the upcoming Varisu movie.

For the 24 hours prior to the official reveal, #AK61 was trending on social media platforms around the world; however, those fans who are familiar with Ajith Kumar’s career will not be surprised by the hype this movie has generated.

On September 21st, the final title and the first look poster was shared online for the film; with its production title ‘AK 61’ being officially altered to the release title of ‘Thunivu’.

Here is everything that we know so far about Thunivu, including why the release could clash with 2023’s Varisu, the all-important first-look movie poster and the new report that Netflix has bagged the OTT streaming rights.

What is Thunivu, aka AK 61?

The Thunivu movie is directed by H Vinoth (Valimai, Theeran Adhigaaram Ondru), produced by Boney Kapoor (Wanted, Vaimai) and Zee Studios, centred around the iconic Ajith Kumar in the leading role.

Starring in the film alongside Kumar will be Manju Warrier, John Kokken, Ajay, Samuthirakani, Kavin and Cibi Chandran – however, their specific roles currently remain TBA.

On September 21st, the first-look movie poster for Thunivu was shared online, see below, with the caption “No Guts, No Glory.”

The movie is slated to be a bank heist-related thriller story, with Pinkvilla noting “While Ajith Kumar is reported to play a college professor in his next, he will be accompanied by Manju Warrier as the female lead.”

Filming for the movie started earlier this year in Hyderabad and Chennai, before moving to Pune for the second schedule. According to The Times of India, the production team have planned for the next stage of filming to commence in Bangkok soon.

“H Vinoth and his crew will be off to Bangkok in the first week of September to start the prep work for what promises to be an intense action-packed schedule. It’s a 21-day shoot in Bangkok for this yet untitled heist thriller, expected to commence from mid-September. Ajith Kumar and the entire team will be off to Bangkok around September 15 for this marathon shooting leg. Some action scenes will be shot by AK and gang in Bangkok.” – Pinkvilla.

Thunivu movie release could clash with Varusi, report says

Unfortunately, a planned release window for the Thunivu movie has not yet been revealed by the production staff or associated distribution partners. However, there has already been a concern that its release date could clash with the highly anticipated ‘Varisu’ movie.

As noted by The Times of India, the production team are eyeing a holiday-centred release for the upcoming Thunivu movie. Sadly, with the 2022 Diwali and December 2022 schedules already on the immediate horizon, “the makers have no option but to shift the film to January [2023].”

“So, there are possibilities of ‘Ajith 61’ [AK 61 – now Thunivu] to release for 2023 Pongal and this will make Ajith face Vijay at the box office as the latter’s ‘Varisu’ is locked to release for the festival. Fans are excited over the inside report regarding the ‘AK 61’ [Thunivu] release, if things fall in place Ajith and Vijay are expected to clash at the box office after 8 years.” – The Times of India.

Recently, actor RK Suresh jokingly tweeted that “#Thunivu Grand World Wide Release On Pongal 2023” due to the potential clash with Varisu, but again this has not yet been confirmed by the filmmakers or production studio.

Other public holidays around this reported period include Republic Day in late-January, Rama Navami in late-March and Ambedkar Jayanti in mid-April.

Today, LetsCinema confirmed that the OTT streaming rights for Thunivu had been acquired by Netflix.

This article will be updated as soon as more information on the Thunivu movie has been revealed, with more trailers and posters expected to drop online over the coming weeks.
