How Tracy Edwards met Jeffrey Dahmer

On the night of July 22, 1991, Dahmer met three men in a Milwaukee bar and offered them $100 to come back to his apartment.

One of the men was 32-year-old Tracy Edwards, who accepted the offer and joined Dahmer at his apartment.

Edwards grew wary of Dahmer when the serial killer attempted to handcuff him and brandished a knife, the Chicago Tribune reports.

Narrow escape

When Dahmer’s attention was focused elsewhere, Edwards hit him over the head and fled the apartment.

Edwards flagged down two Milwaukee police officers who accompanied him back to Dahmer’s apartment. They discovered Polaroids of Dahmer’s dismembered victims and later found a slew of body parts including preserved skulls and two full skeletons.

Following Dahmer’s arrest, the serial killer admitted to his murderous actions and pleaded guilty to 16 counts of murder for which he received 16 life sentences, totalling more than 900 years of jail time.

What happened to Tracy Edwards?

Tracy Edwards would go on to testify against Dahmer in court in 1992 and played a role in the legal proceedings that resulted in the serial killer being convicted.

However, 20 years after his narrow escape from Dahmer, Edwards was arrested himself on July 26, 2011 after being accused of helping another man throw someone off a Milwaukee bridge.

ABC News reports Edwards, who was 52 at the time, had been homeless since 2002 and been moving from shelter to shelter.

In 2012, Edwards pleaded guilty and was convicted for his role in the death of the man thrown from the bridge. Tracy was sentenced to one and a half years in jail and two further years of extended supervision once released. As of 2022, Tracy Edwards is about 63 years of age.
