Jay Spearing was in Liverpool colours once again on Tuesday when he came on as a substitute during Liverpool’s defeat to Rochdale in the Papa John’s Trophy.

The 33-year-old is combining a dual coaching and playing role at Anfield, and in the second half of yesterday’s game, he replaced deadline day signing Arthur Melo.

One Liverpool fan account on Instagram reacted to that moment and stated ‘that’s a tweet you thought you would never see’ to which Spearing responded in the comments section, ‘Neither did I’ added with a laughing emoji.

ARTHUR MELO EARNS SOME MUCH-NEEDED MINUTES

Amongst the talk of Spearing playing for Liverpool again, albeit for the youngsters, their deadline day signing has earned some much-needed minutes.

This international break is crucial for the Juventus loanee to get up to speed because Jurgen Klopp will need his talents in the middle of the park.

Liverpool’s last game prior to the international break was their narrow win over Ajax in the Champions League.

Whilst that performance and win is a positive step in the right direction, it still shouldn’t paper over the cracks that have appeared in the team this season.

Key players such as Thiago Alcantara and Fabinho staying fit very much helps matters, but so does someone like Arthur showing fans why he was brought to the club.

Plus, given that the Brazil star is on a loan deal, it should also give him that motivation to possibly turn this deal into a permanent one next summer.
