Brenden Aaronson has told the MLS website that he hopes to become a “legend” at Leeds United, hinting that he sees his long-term future at Elland Road – and just using the Whites as a stepping stone before joining a bigger club.

Aaronson, 21, has already endeared himself to the Elland Road faithful with some energetic displays – and of course, a goal against Chelsea. He also got an assist against Everton, and arguably the winner in a 2-1 victory over Wolves.

Leeds signed Raphinha from Rennes in the summer of 2020. An exciting, hard-working player that jumped at the chance to play in the Premier League. The Brazilian loved Leeds, proven by a recent post on Instagram, on a dog walk.

Aaronson might have been forgiven for sitting in a similar boat. Perhaps establish himself at Leeds over the next two or three seasons and then advance his career. But his latest comments suggest different, and where he sees himself.

“I’m really grateful to be at Leeds. Everybody can see that I’m willing to work 110% and give everything. I just want to keep getting better and become the best way I can be and hopefully be a legend for the club at some point.”

Aaronson hopes to become Leeds legend

While the love for Leeds from Raphinha was evident, it was always in the minds of Leeds fans that they were ultimately a stepping stone. For Aaronson, he is slightly younger than when Raphinha joined Leeds, still only 21.

Of course, Aaronson may have his head turned if some of Europe’s biggest clubs come calling. Champions League sides, especially given Aaronson has already tasted Champions League football. But his comments are encouraging.

He may feel that he has joined a club where he sees himself for the long term. He has an American manager, a USA teammate in Tyler Adams, and is the attacking heartbeat of a massive club in the best league in the world.
