As you may have heard, Bayern Munich are interested in signing Harry Kane in 2023 – if that move materialises, Tottenham hope to replace the England international with Romelu Lukaku.

The Belgium international enjoyed the best goalscoring spell of his career under Antonio Conte at the San Siro, which earned him a £97.5m move to Chelsea in August 2021.

Lukaku remarkably scored 30 goals in 44 games to fire Inter Milan to the Serie A title in the 2021/22 season, having scored 34 goals under Conte in the 2020/21 campaign.

That is presumably why Tottenham hope to reunite the Italian with Lukaku, despite the fact he scored just eight Premier League goals for Chelsea last term – now, there has been a twist.

What’s the story?

Well, the Belgian has been loaned back to Inter Milan for the 2022/23 campaign, but the Italian giants are already in talks to re-sign the 29-year-old on a permanent basis.

Calciomercato believe Lukaku has no intention of returning to Stamford Bridge, and the Blues also aren’t too keen to have him back as he doesn’t fit the style of Graham Potter.

That is bad news for Tottenham, as it suggests their potential emergency option if Kane joins Bayern Munich will soon become unavailable, with the expectation being that he will sign a long-term contract with Inter Milan.

Tottenham have alternatives to Romelu Lukaku

If the worst case scenario does happen for Tottenham and Kane departs next year, there are other options for Conte and Fabio Paratici to pursue.

One striker the north Londoners could sign is Lautaro Martinez, who Spurs were ready to break their club-record transfer fee to sign over the summer, according to some sources.

The Argentina international, like Lukaku, also shone under Conte at Inter Milan, scoring 40 goals in 97 appearances under the Italian.

Another potential attacking arrival is Anthony Gordon, who has impressed in a central role for Everton so far this season – Daniel Levy was supposedly keen to sign the Liverpudlian over the summer.

It remains to be seen if Kane leaves, but if he does, Lukaku no longer appears to be a realistic replacement.
