Michael Dawson has stated that Joel Matip was ‘absolutely magnificent’ during Liverpool’s nervy 2-1 win over Ajax in the Champions League on Tuesday.

The former Premier League defender hailed Matip’s ability to bring the ball out from the back and how he was constantly picking out his attacking teammates when driving forward with the ball.

Mo Salah opened the scoring for Jurgen Klopp’s side in what was a highly-pressured game for the Merseyside club.

Well, those nerves would have gone up a few levels when Mohammed Kudus riffled in the equaliser like he had a rocket attached to his foot.

But rather than one of the attackers taking the winning limelight yesterday, it was Matip rising high and sealing all three points for his side late on.

The 31-year-old’s performance was praised by Dawson, who shared what he was doing very well all game, as he told Sky Sports News.

“Matip was absolutely magnificent,” said Dawson. “He was bringing the ball out. Ajax sat deep. He got over the halfway line. He was picking the balls to Firmino when he came on, Jota and Diaz. It was a great performance.”

LIVERPOOL ANSWER CRITICS

This was a big result for Liverpool because of what happened in Naples last week and how they have started the new Premier League season.

The club’s defence has come under a lot of stick, but for most parts, they held their own and looked much better against the Dutch champions.

But it’s now about trying to find that best form again, and given what this team has done over the years, you wouldn’t want to bet against them.
