Tottenham Hotspur loanee Harry Winks wants to show the Premier League giants ‘made a mistake’ loaning him out to Serie A outfit Sampdoria for the 2022/23 season, Blucerchiati president Marco Lanna tells Calciomercato

There’s something rather romantic about the idea of an England international strutting his stuff in the blue of Sampdoria. A distinctly 90s-esque transfer for the modern era.

The sort of signing you could imagine James Richardson announcing while peering over the salmon pink pages of Gazzetta dello Sport and sipping on an espresso.

Winks, after falling out of favour under Antonio Conte, joined Sampdoria on loan in August.

And while an ankle injury has limited his impact so far at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris, the 26-year-old is determined to make up for lost time when he returns to full fitness. Which, by the way, should be sooner than later.

“He’ll resume (training) this week. He should be in the squad (for the next Serie A game),” explains Lanna. “(Winks) is very important to us. He wants to show the will to play. He is not afraid of pain.

“About Winks, I am confident that, as soon as he can, he will take the field. He is a guy who really wants to prove to Tottenham that they made a mistake.”

Tottenham Hotspur sent Harry Winks on loan to Serie A outfit Sampdoria

According to Fabrizio Romano, Sampdoria have a £20 million option-to-buy clause in Winks’ contract. One that, should they decide to trigger, would make the ten-time England international their most expensive-ever signing.

“If I wanted to be selfish, I’d say maybe it’s more convenient for Winks to stay,” Conte explained a couple of weeks ago.

“Five strong midfielders, with Rodrigo Bentancur, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, (Yves) Bissouma, (Oliver) Skipp and Winksy; for me, that is OK.

“Players want to play regularly. They want to try to have a different challenge. It is a good opportunity for Sampdoria, especially. And also for Harry; to go outside of England and play in an important league.

“They are getting a really good player. Then next season we will see (if Winks has a future at Tottenham).”
