Newcastle United want Chris Rigg and are prepared to make a move to sign the Sunderland teenager for around £2.5million in January.

The Magpies didn’t go crazy in the summer window but did secure important deals for the likes of Nick Pope, Sven Botman and Alexander Isak.

Newcastle showed it isn’t all about the first team though and have started to add talents for the future too.

Jordan Hackett has joined from Tottenham whilst fellow teenagers Jude Smith and Alex Murphy have arrived from East Fife and Galway United.

Newcastle will want to build a team for years to come – and may even pay millions for a player before they even turn 16.

Newcastle United want Chris Rigg

Sunderland talent Chris Rigg is the prospect Newcastle want to sign, and it’s a name that keeps coming up.

The Sun reported back in April that Newcastle wanted to land Rigg in a deal worth around £1million.

That didn’t happen but the rumours aren’t going away – far from it, in fact.

The Sun now claim that Newcastle are ready to launch a move worth £2.5million this time as they look to raid their bitter rivals.

Everton are also interested but it’s thought that Newcastle will be able to outbid the Toffees.

It’s not all that often that you hear of players trading Sunderland for Newcastle – or vice versa – especially at such a young age.

Yet in the case of Rigg, this move may appeal given that his family are understood to be Newcastle fans despite that Sunderland connection.

Rigg, 15, is already playing Premier League 2 football and started for Sunderland’s Under-21’s against Norwich City last month, playing the full 90 minutes.

Add in that Rigg captained England Under-16’s against Italy last month and there are huge hopes for the Sunderland talent.

Newcastle have been chasing him for months now and whilst a deal may prove more expensive than first thought, the Magpies will hope to have Rigg on board for 2023 and beyond.
