One of the sadder stories at Tottenham Hotspur in recent years was that of Marcus Edwards.
The Hotspur Way academy prospect was tipped for massive things once upon a time at Spurs.
Hell, even Mauricio Pochettino, Tottenham manager at the time, compared Edwards to a certain Lionel Messi.
However, things never worked out for the English attacker in North London and he was sold to Vitoria de Guimaraes during the summer of 2019.
Based on last night though, he might be set to remind Tottenham of what they could’ve had.
Now at Sporting Lisbon, Edwards starred in their Champions League opener on Wednesday night.

The Portuguese outfit hammered Eintracht Frankfurt 3-0 and the former Lilywhite opened the scoring and then set up the second goal in Germany.
According to WhoScored, he was given a rating of 8.40 – the most of any player on the pitch – and it’ll be fascinating to see how much better he gets.
Okay so Pochettino was probably premature in likening Edwards to Messi and although he’ll never reach that standing, he could still develop into one hell of a footballer.
This is a player who’s still only 23 and playing Champions League football every other week is certain to sharpen his skillset even more.
