Wolves would be making a ‘massive signing’ if they succeed in bringing former Chelsea hero Diego Costa back to the Premier League following Sasa Kalajdzic’s ACL injury, former England international Trevor Sinclair tells talkSPORT (6 September, 11.15am).
It is now ten months since Diego Costa kicked a ball in a competitive fixture.
And, make no mistake, the man who turned even the most hard-nosed and battlescarred centre-halves into a quivering wreck during barnstorming spells at Chelsea and Atletico Madrid is no longer the same scene-chewing, bone-crunching force of old.
But Wolves, having lost £15 million signing Kalajdzic for a number of months with an anterior cruciate ligament injury, obviously feel that a 33-year-old Diego Costa still has some oil left in his rust-flecked engine.
And Sinclair wonders if a man who scored 52 goals in just 89 Premier League games for Chelsea could roll back the years in Old Gold, in the knowledge that this is probably his last chance at the very top level.
Will Wolves succeed in Diego Costa pursuit?
“He’s 33 years old. When you get over 30, as a footballer, you start to think; ‘I might not have that many games left’,” explains the former Man City and West Ham winger.
“So if we’ve got that hungry version of Diego Costa, who wants to come and make an impact for Wolves, score goals, then I think it would be a massive, massive signing.”
As reported by the BBC, agreeing a deal for Costa in the post-Brexit world may be easier said than done. He no longer automatically qualifies for a work permit, and an appeal has now been lodged.
An appeal, Sinclair says, the FA should accept. A Premier League with Diego Costa can only be a better, and certainly more interestingly, place.
“Surely special circumstances? He’s a world-renowned star!” Sinclair adds. “If you enrich the Premier League and you’re bringing something unique – experience, titles…”
Per The Telegraph, Wolverhampton Wanderers could turn to another unattached 33-year-old if their pursuit of Diego Costa hits the buffers. Andy Carroll, last seen at West Brom, would be a much more straightforward addition, free of pesky red tape.
