Speaking on his YouTube channel, Fabrizio Romano has been discussing Liverpool and their pursuit of Aurelien Tchouameni this summer.
The Reds were strongly linked with the Frenchman back in May, but unfortunately, the midfielder opted to join Real Madrid over the Reds, but it wasn’t for the lack of trying.
Indeed, according to Romano, Liverpool tried their best to sign the 22-year-old this summer. In fact, the journalist states that Jurgen Klopp called the player a number of times on the phone to try to sell the project to him.
Klopp was supposedly very keen to bring Tchouameni to Anfield as he felt he was the ‘perfect’ solution to Liverpool’s midfield problem.
What’s been said?
Romano spoke about Tchouameni and Liverpool.
“Liverpool only go for a player when they are 100 per cent convinced it’s the right player for the project and for the club. Who was this player? Jude Bellingham a lot of you said, but it was not Jude Bellingham, they asked about Jude Bellingham but it was not a negotiation,” Romano said.
“Liverpool really wanted Aurelien Tchouameni, they tried to enter that race until the end. Jurgen Klopp did his best for a deal, he called the player many times, he explained the project and the plan in the midfield, but Tchouameni had an agreement with Real Madrid.”
“Klopp really wanted him, he was convinced that Tchouameni was the perfect player for the Liverpool midfield for their project, but sometimes players have different plans and that was the case for Tchouameni.”
What could have been
Liverpool fans must be wondering where they would be right now if they had signed Tchouameni this summer.
The Reds have had an underwhelming start to this Premier League season to say the least, and their biggest issue has been in the midfield.
Injuries to Thiago and Naby Keita have decimated Klopp’s options in that area, and a player like Tchouameni would’ve been just what the doctor ordered.
Who knows? Perhaps Liverpool would be much higher in the table right now if this deal had gone through.
