Ian Wright has picked Alexander Isak as one of the signings of the summer and stated that he is ‘very good signing’ from Newcastle United, as he told The Kelly & Wrighty Show on Premier League Productions (05/09/22 at 2:55 pm).

It happened late on in the summer transfer window, but Newcastle broke their club transfer record to secure the £63 million (Sky Sports) talents of the 22-year-old from Real Sociedad.

He didn’t make his debut straightaway as the club tried to sort out his visa issues, but once that was cleared, he then stepped onto the Premier League stage and showed exactly why the Saudi-owned paid such big bucks for him.

Despite coming up against one of the best teams in Europe or one of the best defenders in world football, Isak brushed all of that to one side and scored a stunning debut goal.

Even his disallowed goal for offside saw the Sweden international make an incredible run and then put two Liverpool players on their backside before firing home.

That same magic wasn’t there as the Magpies recorded a goalless draw against Crystal Palace over the weekend, but when Wright was asked to name some of his standout summer captures, he put Isak’s name forward.

“I like Isak at Newcastle,” said Wright. “Another 6ft4 striker. When you see the way he took his first goal. It was unfortunate with his next chance (against Palace) when he tried to dink it.

“I just think at Newcastle, the way he plays, he can play as the number nine. The counter-attacking form. He presses. He has great skill.

“I think he could be a really, really good signing. I think he’s going to be a very good signing.”

CALLUM WILSON NOW HAS COMPETITION

Callum Wilson’s goalscoring record at Newcastle United can’t be questioned because it has been worthy of him earning an England call.

The issue he has faced is that whenever England games have come around or major tournaments, he is either in the treatment room or just coming back from injury, just like he is now.

The former Bournemouth player started the season in a brilliant fashion with two goals from three games, but with Gareth Southgate set to name his squad for the upcoming internationals, Wilson isn’t in a position to be selected.

It’s a crying shame for the player, but for the Magpies, they probably don’t have to rely upon him too much now, especially if Isak shines and keeps the Englishman out of the XI.
