Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain could leave Liverpool after being left out of Jurgen Klopp’s Champions League squad.

The Reds start their Champions League campaign on Wednesday night with a trip to take on Serie A side Napoli.

Klopp had to name his squad on Sunday and there were two notable absentees.

Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain were both omitted from the list, meaning they cannot play against Napoli or throughout the group stage.

January is the earliest point for Liverpool to register the duo if they want to do so.

Fabrizio Romano now claims that both players will consider their futures at Liverpool, most likely at the end of the season, which isn’t a huge surprise but may be even more likely now.

Romano adds that Keita received real interest during the summer but Liverpool chose to keep hold of him.

It now looks like both players could move on in 2023, and who can really blame them after this snub?

Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain could leave Liverpool – The Verdict

Liverpool expected big things from both Keita and Oxlade-Chamberlain.

They paid £53million for Keita and £35million for Oxlade-Chamberlain, but signed them on very different trajectories.

Keita was emerging was one of the top box-to-box midfielders in Europe with RB Leipzig.

Oxlade-Chamberlain had shown potential at Arsenal but failed to really nail down a starting spot at the Emirates Stadium, so Liverpool were looking to get him back on track.

In truth though, it just hasn’t really worked out for either of them.

Injuries have set both players back but neither Keita nor Oxlade-Chamberlain have consistently impacted games even when they have been fit to play.

Both players are out of contract next summer and may simply leave for free, which seems to be the most likely outcome after this Champions League snub.

One thing to note is that both players out injured now and the World Cup means this is a condensed Champions League group stage.

Liverpool’s final group stage fixture is on November 1st, and if the Reds can’t see Keita or Oxlade-Chamberlain featuring by then, there is no point registering them.

That makes their omission slightly less dramatic than is being portrayed, but it’s time for both players to move on and allow Liverpool to re-tool their midfielder in 2023.
