Wolverhampton Wanderers are showing late interest in a deadline day deal to sign Nathan Redmond from Southampton should Leeds United target Hwang Hee-chan leave Molineux.

Wolves now eye Southampton ace Redmond to replace Leeds target Hwang

According to The Athletic (01/09, 14:21), Wolverhampton Wanderers are among a host of clubs considering deadline day deals to sign Southampton star Nathan Redmond. Molineux chiefs are aware that the Saints will allow the winger to leave the south coast on Thursday.

Southampton have strived to sound out possible suitors for Redmond all summer as the St Mary’s natives seek to refresh their frontline. But no team has yet presented a viable offer for the 28-year-old, whom they signed from Norwich City back in 2016 with a £10m move.

Any bid from Wolves will hinge on Hwang Hee-chan leaving Molineux, amid interest from Leeds United. The Whites submitted a £17m bid for the 26-year-old earlier this week, but the offer fell short of the West Midlands outfit’s valuation of their £14m January transfer.

Wolves took up an option to buy Hwang in the mid-season market after hiring the 47-cap South Korea forward on loan from RB Leipzig last summer. Yet Lage is already prepared to consider letting the Gangwon native leave after just five goals in 34 Premier League games.

Redmond one of Lage’s many options amid outcast status at St Mary’s

Any deadline day deal for Wolves to sign Redmond from Southampton would pit Molineux chiefs against European interest in the one-cap England forward. Lage and his staff are still weighing up an approach, as they note he would help to fill the club’s homegrown quota.

Redmond is just one of multiple forward options Wolves are considering in case a club has late interest in Hwang, having rejected Leeds’ bid. Despite Ralph Hasenhuttl once praising the Birmingham native as a ‘special’ player, he has only played once so far in this season.

Hasenhuttl introduced Redmond as a stoppage-time substitute during the Saints’ opening day defeat at Tottenham Hotspur. The Austrian has since omitted the winger from each of his following four matchday sides, along with leaving him out in the EFL Cup second-round.
