Steven Gerrard’s Aston Villa have beaten David Moyes’s West Ham United to the signing of Southampton central defender Jan Bednarek on summer transfer deadline day, according to The Athletic.

Aston Villa to sign West Ham target Jan Bednarek from Southampton

The Athletic have reported this afternoon that Villa have a deal in place to sign Bednarek from Premier League rivals Southampton.

West Ham were close to reaching an agreement, but the 26-year-old £60,000-a-week (SalarySport) defender has decided to move to the Villans instead and is about to undergo a medical, according to the report.

The Athletic have reported that Southampton are ‘happy with the terms of the deal’.

Exciting

In our opinion, Jan Bednarek would be a good signing for Aston Villa and would make Steven Gerrard’s side better.

The Villans have had problems defensively this season and are conceding far too many goals than they would like at the moment.

Bednarek has a wealth of experience in the Premier League, and given that he is only 26, he is a player who can very much get better and improve in the coming years.

It is a blow for West Ham that the defender is choosing Villa over them, and it will be interesting to see what Hammers manager David Moyes does now.
