Burnley manager Vincent Kompany has played down a potential £10 million move for Swansea City striker Michael Obafemi, speaking to Lancs Live.
Despite scoring ten goals in their last three Championship outings, a new centre-forward remains a priority for the keep-ball Clarets heading into deadline day.
A deal for Metz hitman Georges Mikautadze, however, is no longer on the cards. Talks are ongoing regarding a loan move for Brentford’s Halil Dervisoglu.
Obafemi, however, could simply be too expensive for a team who have already brought in 13 new additions. Swansea, Lancs Live say, are demanding a minimum of £10 million.
Will Burnley raid Championship rivals Swansea City for Michael Obafemi?
“We have been linked with a few players now! I can’t even keep up anymore,” Kompany quips. “Although he (Obafemi) is a really good player, he is a Swansea player.”
The former Manchester City captain was unwilling to offer much more when quizzed on Obafemi’s future, however. After swapping the South Coast for Swansea, the 20-year-old hit the target 12 times during a promising debut season in the Championship.
Burnley have already been turned down by Besiktas’ Jackson Muleka and Standard Liege’s Noah Ohio this summer. Kompany remains hopeful, however, that new faces could still arrive before the clock strikes 11pm on Thursday.
“It is close and far at the same time,” he adds. “You think someone is coming and then he’s not, you think someone’s not available and he is. We could be looking still at one or two players potentially joining us but we are not going to do anything desperate.
“It is players that we have known from before or players we have tried and it didn’t work out. And if they come then we will be happy.
“We are still allowed a few loans so it is definitely something we are exploring. I think for the right player there is always something left!
“I don’t want to tip the scales to overspending and needing to sell. That is a priority for me.”
