Aston Villa’s Douglas Luiz is in demand with Arsenal, Liverpool and Newcastle United all believed to be interested in signing him.
Villa boss Steven Gerrard is under pressure and he may hope for a signing or two before Thursday’s deadline.
One situation that may finally have a conclusion is the future of Douglas Luiz, whose contract expires next summer.
There had been real hope that Luiz would sign a new contract with Villa this summer but it hasn’t happened.
Now faced with the prospect of Luiz leaving for free next summer, Villa may be minded to cash in now.
Aston Villa’s Douglas Luiz is in demand
The Daily Mail report that Atletico Madrid want to pay around £20million for Luiz, but there is interest in England too.
Arsenal, Chelsea and Newcastle United are all thought to be keen on signing Luiz with the deadline looming.
Arsenal are back in the hunt for a new midfielder after losing both Thomas Partey and Mohamed Elneny to injury.
Over at Newcastle, Bruno Guimares is now out injured but the Magpies could have stood to add another midfielder anyway.
Luiz, a holding midfielder with real technical ability and hailed as ‘excellent’ by Philippe Coutinho, could fit the bill for either team.
Luiz’s contract situation will certainly make him appealing to Arsenal and Newcastle as a last-gasp signing without breaking the bank.
Add in that Luiz is already a proven Premier League player and the interest is no surprise – and there could yet be another suitor in the mix.
Journalist Matheus Leal of Torcedores in Brazil reported on Tuesday night that Liverpool are interested in signing Luiz.
Leal suggested that Liverpool were willing to pay £20million for Luiz but Villa are seeking a higher price.
Liverpool are looking for potential midfield additions but Luiz may not be the man to move the needle for Jurgen Klopp’s side.
Arsenal or Newcastle make more sense for Luiz given their needs and expectations, whereas it’s hard to see where Luiz would really improve Liverpool right now even with their midfield ageing in certain areas.
