Keith Downie has given an update on the current state of play on Sky Sports regarding Newcastle United’s move for Alexander Isak. He says that the striker is due to arrive this afternoon, though personal terms are yet to be agreed.

Isak, 22, has starred for Sociedad since joining the La Liga club in the summer of 2019. Clocking up 132 appearances in all competitions, the Sweden international has had a hand in 52 goals – scoring 44 times, and laying on eight assists.

The forward has even scored this season already, opening his account in a 4-1 loss to Barcelona. Reports state that Newcastle have agreed a £58million move for Isak, who many fans will remember for his form at Euro 2020.

A player that has already won 37 caps for his country at just 22. Downie now gives an update on where the deal currently sits, which will of course, be a club-record transfer for Newcastle – and a record sale for the Spanish outfit.

“Some significant developments in the last 24 hours regarding Newcastle’s move for Isak,” Downie said. “I expect Isak to arrive on Tyneside this afternoon to formalise that £58million transfer. This is a huge piece of business for Newcastle.

“I understand his personal terms have not yet been agreed, however I don’t expect any issues regarding them. He will then take his medical. Newcastle will then hope to have him unveiled and confirmed by the weekend.”

‘I understand’: Downie update on Newcastle move for Isak

It is a wonderful signing for Newcastle. Isak is one of the best young talents in European football, and he has proven that in both La Liga, and on the international stage with his form for Sociedad and Sweden. A real, real talent.

£58million is a lot of money. But actually, it is good value. He can easily become one of the Premier League’s best strikers. What it will do, will put Callum Wilson and Chris Wood’s positions in the squad in doubt.

Wood especially. He might have to consider his future in the next week, even after scoring the winner in the Carabao Cup against Tranmere this week. But it is a real statement of intent and a superb signing, if a deal gets over the line.
