Barnsley coach Michael Duff believes there was little his side could have done to keep out stunning finishes from Luis Sinisterra and Mateusz Klich during their 3-1 EFL Cup second-round defeat at Leeds United on Wednesday, speaking to Yorkshire Live.

In less than a week, Duff’s Barnsley have conceded no fewer than five goals that can probably described as, to use the manager’s own expression, ‘worldies’.

Wycombe Wanderers will almost certainly be dominating the podium during August’s League One Goal of the Month awards; all three of their strikes during Saturday’s thumping win at Oakwell leaving the home fans speechless.

Barnsley, then, could have done without coming up against a £21 million forward with a point to prove just four days later.

It took Luis Sinisterra just 20 minutes to show Elland Road what all the fuss was about during a dazzling full debut, curling a wicked shot into the far corner before setting up another sublime finish – this time from Mateusz Klich – with the sort of bamboozling run that quickly became his calling card at Feyenoord.

“I am disappointed. You are never happy losing. We started the game really well and the response was excellent after going 2-0 down,” sighs Duff, who’s side missed the chance to draw level at 2-2 in the second half when Callum Styles hit the post from the penalty spot.

“Ultimately, we have been undone by a couple of bits of Premier League quality.

“Their first goal (from Sinisterra) was brilliant; whipped into the top corner. And their third goal was an excellent finish as well. That’s a bit where we are at this week, a few of the goals we have conceded this week have been ‘worldies’.”

Sinisterra, as you might expect, looked every inch a £21 million forward up against a third-tier defence. After an injury-interrupted start to his Leeds career, a man who produced 23 goals and 14 assists for Feyenoord last term is clearly bidding to make up for lost time.

Klich, meanwhile, maintained his recent resurgence with two on the night, as captain Liam Cooper returned to the XI.
