Jan Bednarek is ‘getting closer’ to joining Aston Villa with his time at Premier League rivals Southampton coming to an end, Polish football reporter Tomas Wlodarczyk tells Meczyki

Wlodarczyk has been keeping a very close eye on the Saints this summer.

It was he who said Bartlomiej Dragowski was on the verge of joining Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side before work permit concerns saw the deal fall through, while breaking the news of Matuesz Lis’ impending switch to the South Coast in June.

Now, however, Wlodarczyk’s sights have turned to another Polish footballer. One who could be on his way out of Southampton before next week’s transfer deadline.

Will Aston Villa sign Jan Bednarek from Southampton?

“Jan Bednarek is getting closer to Aston Villa,” the reporter says. “A club run by Steven Gerrard would see him (arriving) on a yearly loan.

“The Pole also has other options, but I bet it will be Aston Villa. His adventure with Southampton is slowly coming to an end.”

Bednarek, valued in the region of £15 million, would arrive at Villa Park as a replacement for the injured Diego Carlos. Villa boss Steven Gerrard is convinced the Brazilian will still have a part to play this season, but he is still expected to be out of action until next year after an Achilles injury.

26-year-old Bednarek arrives, however, on the back of a difficult 18 months at Southampton. He’s looked error prone and low on confidence for much of that time. While Bednarek cannot shoulder the blame alone, he certainly had a part to play as Southampton conceded a staggering 67 goals in 38 games last term.

Aston Villa have also been linked with Daniele Rugani, Duje Caleta-Car, Victor Nelsson and PSG misfit Abdou Diallo. Diallo, a £30 million signing from Borussia Dortmund in 2019, is reportedly keen to work with Gerrard at Villa Park

But Bednarek, for all his faults, does arrive with plenty of Premier League experience under his belt.
