Borussia Dortmund want Naby Keita with Liverpool potentially facing a big decision over the midfielder’s future at Anfield.
Liverpool’s midfield has come under fire in the early weeks of the Premier League season.
James Milner, Jordan Henderson and Thiago are all into their 30’s, Fabinho isn’t far away, Curtis Jones hasn’t developed as hoped and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain will never be a first-choice player at Liverpool.
That’s without even bringing up Keita, whose contract expires next summer and could leave Anfield soon – possibly even sooner than expected.
Borussia Dortmund want Naby Keita
The Mirror report that Borussia Dortmund are interested in signing Keita.
It’s stated that Dortmund fancy signing Keita, possibly before next week’s transfer deadline.
Any money brought in could be reinvested by Liverpool as they target a new midfielder, with Brighton and Hove Albion’s Moises Caicedo mentioned.
Liverpool would seemingly want Jude Bellingham as their top target, but whether Dortmund would be willing to sell now is another matter.
Liverpool may have to wait until next summer for Bellingham, unless they can tempt Dortmund into a part-exchange deal involving Keita.
It’s no great surprise that Keita still has real admirers in Germany having excelled during his time with RB Leipzig.
Keita, 27, notched 17 goals in 71 games for Leipzig, starring as a skilful box-to-box midfielder with a real eye for goal.
Liverpool bought into that and saw huge potential in Keita, paying £53million to sign him but it just hasn’t worked out as hoped with Keita managing only 11 goals in 117 outings.
Injuries and inconsistency have been major problems for Keita throughout his time at Liverpool and you could hardly blame Liverpool for selling now.
If Liverpool don’t plan to give him a new contract, selling Keita to Dortmund in the next week may make perfect sense – even if signing a replacement is difficult.
