Last night, Blackburn handed a second start of the season to Tyler Morton in the Carabao Cup, following the 19-year-old’s loan move from Liverpool.

The England Under-20 international is a blossoming midfield prospect, who has already been described as an “incredible” footballer by Jürgen Klopp.

However, the German presumably won’t be pleased about what happened last night.

What’s the story?

Well, Blackburn decided to field the teenager as a centre-back against Bradford last night, due to an injury crisis in defence.

According to Rovers themselves, Morton was “boss” as he helped the Championship side record a 2-1 win over the League Two outfit.

WhoScored shows that the Blackburn No.6 completed eight of his attempted 12 long-range passes, while also making two clearances, one tackle and one interception.

Additionally, Morton’s 73 passes were more than any other player on the pitch managed to make – he finished the 90 minutes with a passing accuracy of 91.8%.

As impressive as he was, Klopp would surely prefer to see the Kirkby academy graduate getting game time in his natural midfield position, especially as Liverpool have an injury crisis of their own in that department.

Liverpool may have to recall Tyler Morton

In our view, if Liverpool fail to sign a new midfielder before the September 1st deadline, and Blackburn continue to use Morton as a defender, the Reds may need to consider recalling their Wallasey-born prodigy.

Liverpool’s bench for the 2-1 defeat to Manchester United on Monday was woefully short of experienced options, to the point where Morton actually would’ve been one of the most experienced players on it.

Klopp handed Morton two Premier League appearances last season – including a start in the 2-2 draw against Tottenham – so he clearly trusts the youngster in big games.

If things continue the way they are, Klopp must consider a recall.
