Speaking on the Que Golazo Podcast, Fabrizio Romano has been discussing Real Madrid’s interest in Gabriel Jesus earlier this summer.
It was widely reported before his move to Arsenal that Madrid had an eye on Jesus, and now, Romano has shared just how much the Spanish giants wanted the striker.
Indeed, Romano says that, despite links to the likes of Robert Lewandowski and Darwin Nunez, Jesus was the only striker Real Madrid really wanted, but unfortunately for Los Blancos, a deal proved impossible due to Jesus’ status as a non-EU player.
What’s been said?
Romano was discussing Real Madrid’s transfer strategy.
“They sign if they are convinced there is a top player on the market ready for Real Madrid. At the moment it’s a no. When they missed out on Mbappe, there was a panic mentioning a lot of players for Madrid like Lewandowski, Darwin Nunez, but at the end the only player they really wanted was Gabriel Jesus, but it was impossible because he doesn’t have a European passport and this is why the deal didn’t happen. They decided to not move on any other player and to wait and wait and wait,” Romano said.
We can see why
Real Madrid wanted to sign Jesus this summer after missing out on Kylian Mbappe, and after just three Premier League games for Arsenal, we can see why.
The Brazilian has been incredible for the Gunners since arriving at the club from Manchester City. Yes, he only has two goals to his name, but his all-around play has been incredible as he’s helped the north London club to three consecutive wins to start the season.
The idea of Jesus playing in a front three alongside Vinicius Jr and Federico Valverde is mouthwatering, but sadly, the fact that Madrid have a deluge of South Americans at the club is what stopped them from signing Jesus due to La Liga’s registration rules.
Madrid’s loss was Arsenal’s gain and the Gunners have certainly landed a gem here.
