Newcastle United want Jose Cifuentes and are now fighting Leeds United in the race to sign the LAFC midfielder this summer.

The Magpies showed their credentials with a superb display in the 3-3 draw with Manchester City on Sunday evening.

Eddie Howe’s men have a real shot at a top eight finish this season and the Newcastle boss will be keen to see more new signings arrive very soon.

Amid links to Ajax star Edson Alvarez, it looks like Newcastle are seeking to bring in another midfielder and Cifuentes is the latest name on the radar.

Newcastle United want Jose Cifuentes

The Sun claim that Newcastle are ‘making hurried checks’ on LAFC ace Cifuentes ahead of a possible bid for the midfielder.

It’s stated that both Newcastle and Leeds have been ‘tipped off’ that Brighton and Hove Albion are trying to push through a £6million deal for Cifuentes.

If there is anybody who you want to try and copy in the transfer market, it’s probably Brighton.

The Seagulls have nailed their recruitment for years now and having found an Ecuadorian midfield maestro in Moises Caicedo, they want another one in Cifuentes.

Cifuentes, 23, joined LAFC from America de Quito in 2020 and has impressed in Major League Soccer.

Cifuentes is strong, tenacious, quick, skilful and loves a shot from long range, making him a truly superb box-to-box midfield player.

Beating Brighton won’t be easy given what they have done for Ecuadorian teammate Caicedo, but Newcastle and Dan Ashworth – formerly of Brighton himself – may now move in for Cifuentes too.

Hailed as ‘terrific’ by South American football expert Tim Vickery, Cifuentes was picked out for stardom three years ago and is now seemingly Premier League-bound.

Leeds and Newcastle are looking like potential destinations for Cifuentes, but Brighton will hope their groundwork leaves them at the front of the queue for his signature.
