Speaking on his YouTube channel, Alasdair Gold has shared what he’s been hearing about Djed Spence.
The wing-back signed for Tottenham earlier this summer from Middlesbrough, but it’s fair to say that his start to life at Spurs hasn’t quite been what many had expected.
Indeed, it was expected that Spence would be joining Spurs to make a first-team impact, but in the north London club’s opening two games of the season, he’s not played a single minute and he didn’t even make the bench against Chelsea.
Inevitably, this led to speculation about the 22-year-old potentially going out on loan, but according to Gold, the former Nottingham Forest loanee has no desire to leave Spurs on a temporary basis this summer.
What’s been said?
Gold shared what he knows about Spence.
“With Spence, he’s a very young guy, and we should just be calm. I was speaking to people around him again this week and there’s no desire to go on loan or anything like that. I don’t know if he could even go to another English club, he’d have to go abroad, but there’s no desire to do that,” Gold said.
Fight for his spot
Djed Spence waited months for this move to Tottenham. In fact, according to The Athletic, he was speaking about this move all the way back in January, and he’s not going to give up this easily.
Spence has done his time out on loan cutting his teeth and after last season’s successes, he probably feels as though he can fight for his spot at Spurs.
With all due respect, Matt Doherty and Emerson Royal haven’t been the most reliable players for Antonio Conte, so it may just be a matter of Spence biding his time before he gets a chance.
Spence should get a first-team chance at Spurs, and while a loan could be beneficial, the wing-back didn’t join Tottenham just to be shipped out within weeks.
