Barry Ferguson has urged Chelsea midfielder Billy Gilmour to return to Rangers on loan this summer, despite interest in the Scotland international from both Everton and Brighton this summer. A reunion with Frank Lampard is on the cards.
Gilmour, 21, is likely to leave Chelsea after being axed from the club’s pre-season tour early. He has failed to make the matchday squad for either of Chelsea’s two Premier League games – a win over Everton, and a draw with Tottenham.
Everton and Brighton are said to be keen on Gilmour. Lampard gave Gilmour his first senior appearance at Chelsea, a breakthrough that saw the midfielder become a full Scotland international. But under Thomas Tuchel, he is struggling.
Now, Rangers legend Ferguson has told Go Radio that he should consider a loan move back to where it all started – at Rangers. He says Rangers fans would love to see him in a Light Blue shirt, having left the club as an academy player.

“He wants to play [Billy Gilmour]. Would the Rangers fans love to see him come back on loan to Rangers? I’m sure they would. I’m quite sure it would be a comfortable place for Billy to come. Progress his career and get some game time.
“He could do well for the national team as well, and who is to say. I haven’t heard anything, but it wouldn’t be a bad option if Rangers were to slot him into the midfield to get him a game,” Ferguson said, as per the Glasgow Times.
Ferguson: Gilmour urged to return to Rangers, Everton and Brighton keen
Now, more than ever, it makes sense. Gilmour has been linked with a return to Rangers in the past. But now, it is more likely than before. Gilmour needs game time. Why not do it at a club that will at least be in the Europa League?
Rangers might even get themselves in the Champions League, if they can see off PSV Eindhoven in the Netherlands next week. The Gers could do with another body in the middle of the park. Steven Davis is now 37 years of age.
Ryan Jack has his injury issues. Glen Kamara is in and out of the side and has been linked with a move. John Lundstram is first choice. But Gilmour would be a top addition, a player that Roy Keane once branded “world class”.
