Tottenham could now be without star defender Cristian Romero for numerous weeks with news that the Argentine set for a spell out through injury.

According to Football London, the former Atalanta centre-back will miss the next few games due to a muscle injury suffered during Tottenham’s thrilling 2-2 draw against Chelsea, where Romero’s hairpull on Marc Cucurella was a major talking point.

The defender has played every minute of the new season for Spurs, however, Antonio Conte could now be without his star centre-back due to injury, with Romero likely to miss key UEFA Champions League fixtures as well as a clash against Manchester City.

Joining this summer permanently for a reported £42m, Romero has flourished in the Premier League since arriving from Bergamo last year, and the defender missing the next few games have long-term effects for Tottenham for how their season unfolds.

Indeed, a strong start to the season will give Tottenham the perfect platform to build from and to once again finish in the top-four, and having Romero absent due to injury for some huge upcoming games could be a massive blow for the north London side.

Whilst Conte has strengthened Tottenham’s centre-back options in FC Barcelona defender Clement Lenglet, the Frenchman is a major downgrade on Romero, and this injury news is the last thing Spurs wanted to hear after an impressive start to the new season.

Romero was pivotal in Tottenham’s fourth-place finish last season, and whilst the north London side were solid with the defender out injured last year, losing the Argentine this time could hit harder than ever before.

After all, Tottenham have some big games coming up, and with Spurs yet to keep a clean sheet this season, losing their best defender in Romero for the next few weeks could unbalance the backline in this crucial stage of the campaign.
