Leeds United are reportedly showing interest in a surprise move for Borussia Dortmund left-back Raphael Guerreiro – a player that Cristiano Ronaldo wanted Real Madrid to sign in 2016, when he was still at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Guerreiro, 28, has entered the final year of his contract at Dortmund. It comes after six seasons with Dortmund in which he has had a hand in 71 goals, during 191 appearances. But it could come to an abrupt end for the Euro 2016 winner.

No new deal has been arranged. It could be that the Portugal international is keen to try something new. He has been linked with Manchester City, but Leeds are the latest club to show an interest – with his value like to be a cut-price fee.

Indeed, Leeds are keeping tabs on their left-back situation. Junior Firpo has been sidelined for the last few weeks, and Pascal Struijk has been forced to replace him – despite naturally being a centre-back. There are doubts over Firpo.

The belief among Leeds fans is that he has not shown the kind of quality they want from their left-back. Even if Firpo is fit, fans still want a new signing. Clearly, Guerreiro would be quite the coup, given his Dortmund exploits.

Back in 2016, now-Manchester United striker Ronaldo was asked who he would sign from either Dortmund or Bayern. He responded – as quoted by Bleacher Report – as saying: “Perhaps my team-mate in Portugal, Raphael Guerreiro.”

What a signing Guerreiro would be for Leeds. There is no doubt that the Portugal ace, who is still only 28, is capable of joining a club in the Champions League. But with time running out this summer, Leeds could come into play.

It all depends on Guerreiro. Clearly, he is keen for a new challenge and will not sign a new deal. But Leeds are beneath him, ultimately. The only chance Leeds have is a big contract offer, and that others choose not to sign him.
