Willian’s proposed move to Fulham could be confirmed in a matter of days as the former Chelsea and Arsenal winger looks to secure a shock return to the Premier League, as reported by Goal.
And here we were thinking we’d seen the last of Willian.
The 70-cap Brazil international looked well past his shelf life when his ill-fated and ill-judged spell at the Emirates Stadium came spluttering to a premature and slightly sad end around 12 months ago; Departing after just one truly disastrous season on the red side of North London.
But Fulham obviously feel Willian, who recently turned 34, still has something to offer.
The two-time Premier League winner terminated his contract at Brazilian giants Corinthians last week; Poor form on the pitch and issues off it meaning his situation at the Neo Quimica Arena had quickly become untenable.
According to Goal, Willian could have a new club within the ‘coming days’. The free-agent is already training at Fulham, and his representatives were in London for talks on Wednesday. Willian wants the move rubber stamped, and an agreement should be reached sooner rather than later, although Saturday’s derby with in-form Brentford is likely to come too soon.
Fulham are set to bring Willian back to the Premier League
“My goal is to live abroad, in London,” Willian said last week, with Fulham offering the former Chelsea star the chance to return to his beloved capital city home. “I have an English passport, so I can live there with my family. That’s my goal.
“Not that I won’t come to visit Brazil again, spend a few days with my family. But to live, without a doubt, it will be abroad.
“I don’t have a club yet. I will decide (soon). I’m going to travel with the family and there I’ll decide calmly, with a clear head, to see what will be the best option for me and my family as well.”
Willian’s arrival should offset the injury-enforced absences of Harry Wilson and Manor Solomon. He will become their eighth new signing since winning the Championship title in May.
“Willian is world class,” Paul Merson told Sky Sports as recently as 2020. “Willian has been outstanding, he could play for Manchester City tomorrow. He’s a special player.”
