Matheus Nunes has missed training with Sporting Lisbon today after jetting out to England in order to complete his £38 million move to Premier League outfit Wolverhampton Wanderers, as reported by Record

A couple of weeks ago, you’d have got longer odds on Gabby Agbonlahor donning Old Gold and professing his love for all things Wolves.

Nunes, according to Sporting coach Ruben Amorim, was staying at the 2021 Portuguese champions for another season, turning down what he describes as life-changing opportunities abroad.

Brazil-born Nunes, it was claimed, would only change his tune if a Champions League club came calling. He reportedly rejected a £35,000-a-week offer from Wolves earlier in the window too. West Ham, Everton and Newcastle were given the cold shoulder, too, in recent windows.

So when ripples started to appear on Monday night suggesting that a breakthrough had been reached, even the most trusting of Molineux matchgoers would have been forgiven for taking the rumours with enough salt to season a year’s supply of McDonalds fries.

That was, of course, until further details started to emerge. Matheus Nunes, it seems, will be a Wolves player after all. He could even make his full debut – alongside £27 million winger Goncalo Guedes – at Tottenham Hotspur this weekend (Sky Sports).

Wolves are set to sign Matheus Nunes from Sporting Lisbon

According to Record, backed up by Mais Futebol, Nunes didn’t take part in Sporting Lisbon’s training session this morning. He is on his way to England instead, and could officially be confirmed as a member of Bruno Lage’s squad before the ITV News hits our screens at 10pm.

Nunes, one of Europe’s most exciting young midfielders, will cost Wolves a club-record £38 million, rising to £42 million with bonuses. With Nunes and Guedes on board – plus a new striker potentially too – the mood has changed at Molineux. Frustration turning to faith.

“Sporting is a fantastic team,” Pep Guardiola said a few months ago before giving Nunes the old Nathan Redmond treatment.

“Matheus Nunes is one of the best players in the world today. Nunes is one of the best at the moment.”
