Rumours have led fans to believe that Tom Holland could be the actor to play the new James Bond as the franchise’s makers talk about reinventing the character.
Speculation surrounding the next James Bond actor have been rife ever since Daniel Craig left the franchise after 2021’s No Time To Die.
The 54-year-old English actor played the fictional British Secret Service agent for 15 years, starting with 2006’s Casino Royale.
Since Daniel’s departure from the Bond franchise, many A-list actors like Henry Cavill, Tom Hardy and Idris Elba have been rumoured to be potential successors. However, fans were struck when Tom’s name became associated with the franchise.
Actor Tom Holland rumoured to be new James Bond
Tom’s fans, who absolutely adored him in his role as Spider-Man, would love to see him become the next Bond, but they weren’t the ones to begin the rumours.
The rumours stemmed when the odds of the Spider-Man: No Way Home star becoming the next Bond was released recently.
As reported by The Express, the 26-year-old Uncharted star has been given 40/1 odds of becoming the new 007 by Ladbrokes.
Tom is a decade older now than Daniel Craig was when he played his first Bond role back in 2006.
Ladbrokes’ Alex Apati has said, as reported by the outlet: “Tom Holland might not be the traditional Bond-type, but the odds suggest he has a slight chance of replacing Daniel Craig, and plenty of punters seem to think the same.”
Most Bond actors have been much older than Tom,who is just 26 now. The other rumored contenders for the role like Henry and Tom (Hardy) are 39 and 44 respectively.
The rumours of Tom’s potentially being cast as Bond don’t seem far off as the producer of the franchise, Barbara Broccoli, has talked about reinventing the character.
“There isn’t a script and we can’t come up with one until we decide how we’re going to approach the next film because, really, it’s a reinvention of Bond,” the producer told Deadline in June 2022. “We’re reinventing who he is and that takes time. I’d say that filming is at least two years away.”
Fans react to rumours of Tom as 007
Many fans caught wind of the rumours linking the MCU star with the role of Bond. Lovers of the 007 franchise had a lot to say about the speculation on social media.
One fan tweeted: “Saw a TikTok saying there’s a rumor about a celebrity who’s gonna be the next James Bond and it turns out to be Tom Holland. Ugh i love tom SO MUCH but i dont think he should be the next James Bond.”
“I love Tom Holland, but I do not think he’s a good fit for the next James Bond at all. We need someone like Cavill or Elba. If we already didn’t have the wonderful Ben Whishaw as Q, I think that role would be perfect for Tom,” one fan thoughtfully wrote.
“Also I vote tom holland to be the next James bond,” wrote a fan in favour of the Spider-Man star.
Sony once rejected Tom’s pitch for a James Bond origin story
Speaking to Total Film magazine (as reported by Games Radar) ahead of the release of Uncharted (2022), Tom revealed that he had pitched Sony studios the idea of a James Bond origin story film.
Tom revealed that his pitch was about showing a young Bond starting out in the world of high-stakes espionage.
“I had a meeting, after or during ‘Spider-Man 2’ [‘Spider-Man: Far From Home’] with Sony to pitch this idea of a young Bond film that I’d come up with,” he said.
“It was the origin story of James Bond. It didn’t really make sense. It didn’t work. It was the dream of a young kid, and I don’t think the Bond estate [was] particularly interested.”
He explained how that idea inspired the making of Uncharted, which chronicles game character Nathan Drake’s origin story.
